US Strike on Larak Island Pre-empts a Rocket-Launched Sea Mine Barrage
Truck-mounted Fajr-5 launchers can fire four rockets carrying one drifting mine each into the Omani Channel
US Central Command fired on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps positions on Larak Island late on 30 August to intercept and destroy two Iranian rockets that were about to be launched, in the first American attack on Iran in about a month.
The operation was narrower than statements out of Washington implied. It appears to have been limited to pre-empting an imminent launch, and the Iranian response was scaled to match. CENTCOM issued no target details, but the equipment involved appears to have been one or more Fajr-5 rocket systems configured to deploy sea mines.
The Fajr-5 is a 333mm multiple launch rocket system that normally carries a high-explosive warhead, and has been widely exported since its introduction in the 1990s. In Exercise Great Prophet-19, held on 18 to 23 January 2025, Fajr-5 rockets each carrying a single sea mine were fired from track-mounted launchers along the Hormuz coast. The launcher is truck-mounted with four tubes, which suggests the IRGC was preparing to put eight mines into the Strait, most plausibly aimed at the Omani Channel on the southern side.
Mines delivered this way are free-floating rather than tethered, carry a relatively small charge, and need a fusing system insensitive enough to survive the stresses of flight. It is an inefficient and complex way to lay a minefield, and using it points to an emergency measure by a force that can no longer lay mines from small boats as easily as it once did.
The choice of method also lends weight to CENTCOM's claim, made the week before, to have cleared mines from the Strait. Re-mining a waterway that has just been swept is only worth the effort if the sweep worked. On that reading, Iranian assertions of control over the Strait look thinner than the rhetoric around them, a gap that also runs through the disputed mine claims.
Announcing that the mines had been cleared, Donald Trump wrote that Iran had been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines would be immediately and systematically destroyed, and that a zero tolerance policy on mine placement was in full force.
For owners, the practical question is unchanged. A drifting mine with a small charge is a hazard that no routing advice fully removes, and the anchorage options either side of the Strait have already absorbed months of traffic that will not transit. Cargo volumes through the waterway remain more than 90% below their pre-conflict level, as set out in the six-month volume picture.
