Rubico lines up third MR newbuilding with Trafigura charter attached

The Nasdaq-listed owner is acquiring a further product and chemical tanker under construction at Guangzhou Shipyard International through a related-party deal with Top Ships

An MR product tanker underway at sea

Nasdaq-listed tanker owner Rubico is lining up its third MR tanker newbuilding through another related-party transaction with Top Ships, signing a letter of intent to acquire a special-purpose company that holds a construction contract for an MR product and chemical tanker at Guangzhou Shipyard International. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter, adding to a growing newbuilding programme for the Athens-based owner.

The acquisition structure, in which Rubico buys the special-purpose vehicle holding the shipbuilding contract rather than the vessel directly once complete, mirrors the approach used for the company's two previous MR newbuilding acquisitions through related-party deals with Top Ships. Repeating the same transaction structure suggests both companies have found the arrangement efficient for transferring newbuilding contracts between related entities as Rubico continues to expand its fleet.

The new vessel carries an attached charter to commodity trading house Trafigura, giving Rubico secured employment for the ship from the point of delivery rather than needing to source a charter separately once the tanker enters service. Newbuildings delivered with charters already attached are generally viewed favourably by owners and their financiers, since they reduce the revenue uncertainty associated with placing a brand-new vessel into the spot or short-term charter market.

MR tankers remain a closely watched segment of the product tanker market, given their flexibility across both clean petroleum product and chemical cargoes and their exposure to shifting regional refining and trade patterns. Continued newbuilding activity in the segment, including Rubico's latest acquisition, reflects sustained owner confidence in MR earnings prospects even as broader tanker markets navigate significant disruption from Middle East conflict and rerouted crude and product flows.

With this latest letter of intent signed, Rubico's newbuilding programme now extends to three MR tankers acquired through the Top Ships relationship, positioning the company to grow its fleet with modern, chartered tonnage as it continues to build out its presence in the product and chemical tanker market.
