Saudi Arabian terminal operator Red Sea Gateway Terminal and France's CMA CGM Group have signed an agreement to jointly develop and operate a terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port.

The investment, made in collaboration with the Saudi Ports Authority and aimed at developing terminal four of the port, is expected to be about SAR 1.6bn, or $434m.

The commitment supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme, which aims to reduce the kingdom's economic dependence on hydrocarbon revenue by investing in sectors including tourism and logistics.

"As the global trade landscape continues to evolve and infrastructures need to expand and modernise, terminals are becoming increasingly strategic assets," said Rodolphe Saade, chief executive of CMA CGM Group.

The investment in Jeddah, a key trade gateway on the Red Sea, comes amid rising uncertainty over trade access in the Middle East. Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has pushed cargo owners and carriers to reassess their reliance on Gulf routings, giving Red Sea capacity added strategic weight.

The agreement builds on an earlier deal. In late 2025 the two parties signed an agreement to develop and operate a container terminal at the same port. J.P. Morgan acted as financial adviser to the latest agreement.

Jeddah Islamic Port is the largest container gateway on the Saudi Red Sea coast and the primary maritime entry point for the western half of the kingdom. Terminal four sits within a port estate that the Saudi Ports Authority has been progressively opening to international operating partners under long-term concessions.

For CMA CGM the transaction extends a terminal portfolio that the carrier has expanded steadily across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Africa, tying its liner network to controlled quayside capacity at gateway ports.
