Dutch Ports Stop Work for Eight Hours in 4 September Strike
Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the Zeeland ports halt from 11:15 to 19:00, with effects expected to run for up to two weeks
Dock workers in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the Zeeland ports will stop work from 11:15 to 19:00 on Friday 4 September, in a national port strike called by the unions FNV and CNV as part of a wider series of actions against government plans for social security.
The stoppage covers ship handling across a large part of the Rotterdam complex. Loading and discharge, mooring, towage and cargo inspection all fall within its scope, and members are also out at terminals in Amsterdam, Vlissingen and Terneuzen, where the unions have a smaller base.
The port authority expects vessels to wait, both alongside at the berth and out in the anchorage. Its assessment is that the stoppage is short and that waiting times will rise moderately rather than sharply, with limited after-effects on the quay itself.
The chain behind the quay is the more exposed part. Work missed inside an eight-hour window has to be caught up afterwards, and the recovery is expected to run through the logistics chain for one to two weeks. Boxes that miss a window at a deep-sea terminal displace the slots booked behind them, and the displacement travels outward from there.
The timing lands on a barge sector that is already short of capacity. Low water on the Rhine has pushed waiting times at container terminals for inland vessels to around 60 hours, and an eight-hour halt at the deep-sea terminals adds to a queue that is not clearing.
The strike has been announced well in advance, which lets carriers and forwarders plan around it. Rotterdam's competitors are not strike-free either: both Antwerp and Hamburg have handled industrial action of their own this year, which limits the scope for cargo to move permanently to a neighbouring range on the strength of a single stoppage.
