Keyfield Buys Mega Dredger Inai Kenanga at Steep Discount to Valuation

The 32,205 cubic metre hopper vessel was acquired from receiver-managed owners

Malaysian offshore vessel owner Keyfield International has entered the dredging market by acquiring the 2016-built trailing suction hopper dredger Inai Kenanga for $24.7m, equivalent to about RM 99.7m.

The vessel was acquired from Inai Rimba on an as-is, where-is basis. Malayan Banking had appointed receivers and managers over that company in March 2024.

The pricing reflects the distressed circumstances rather than the asset. An independent market valuer assessed the dredger's fair market value at $63.7m, while the estimated cost of constructing a similarly specified vessel is upwards of $150m. The purchase price sits roughly 61 percent below the independent valuation.

The vessel is substantial. Completed in 2016 at a reported cost of RM 1.2bn, it was at the time the largest dredger in Asia and the third largest in the world, with a hopper capacity of 32,205 cubic metres. It is designed for large-scale dredging, land reclamation, marine engineering, major infrastructure and coastal development work.

Reactivation is the offsetting cost. Keyfield will fund $23.8m of the purchase, with a further $0.9m funded alongside an estimated reactivation cost of $15m, taking the effective outlay well above the headline figure.

For Keyfield the transaction is a diversification away from oil and gas support work into infrastructure and reclamation markets. Trailing suction hopper dredgers of this size are held by a small number of European and Asian contractors, and secondhand units in the class rarely reach the open market.

Laid-up dredging tonnage carries a reactivation risk that a straightforward secondhand purchase does not. Dredge pumps, suction pipes and hopper systems deteriorate during idle periods, and the gap between a valuation and a working asset is measured in yard time as much as in capital.
