APM Terminals begins $570m expansion at Peru's Callao
Muelle Norte upgrade to lift container capacity to 1.75m boxes by 2030

APM Terminals has begun a $570m expansion of the Muelle Norte facility at the Port of Callao, aiming to raise capacity at Peru's main multipurpose gateway by 2030. The upgrade will lift annual container capacity to 1.75m boxes from 1.3m and general-cargo capacity to 18m tonnes from 13.5m, with the work delivered in two phases while the terminal keeps operating.
The first phase, running from 2026 to 2028, covers container infrastructure including a new berth able to handle the largest container ships, new handling equipment and a new general-cargo gate; the second phase, from 2028 to 2030, focuses on general cargo. A civil-engineering contractor working in consortium holds a design-build contract worth more than €100m to build a new 441-metre, 44-metre-wide berth over a 21-month period. The project is part of a staged redesign of the terminal under the operator's concession, triggered after throughput passed the one-million-TEU threshold set in the agreement.
