US Navy Waives Post-Shakedown Period for Submarine USS Massachusetts

The seventh Block VI Virginia-class boat goes to fleet tasking without the usual availability

The US Navy has completed shakedown trials on the attack submarine USS Massachusetts and declared the boat ready for fleet tasking, waiving its post-shakedown availability on the grounds of what the service called superb material condition and combat readiness.

The Navy said on 17 August that waiving the period was made possible by the operational quality of the ship during trials and by the urgency of delivering warfighting capability to the fleet.

A post-shakedown availability is normally a scheduled shipyard period following initial trials, used to correct deficiencies found during testing and to complete work deferred from construction. Skipping it moves a boat into operational service earlier and frees yard capacity, but removes a planned opportunity to address defects before deployment.

"The waiver reflects the exceptional condition of the ship and our determination to deliver combat-ready capability faster," said Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle in a statement. "It also allows our shipbuilding workforce to focus its talent and capacity where we need it most, building the next generation of submarines our nation requires."

Vice Admiral Rob Gaucher, director of submarine programs, said waiving the period was a calculated risk taken in pursuit of efficiency, innovation and shipbuilding speed.

Newport News Shipbuilding, part of HII, first delivered the boat in November 2025, and the submarine was commissioned in March. It is the seventh Block VI Virginia-class submarine.

The decision comes as US naval shipbuilding faces sustained pressure on yard throughput and workforce availability, with submarine construction schedules among the most closely watched programmes in the fleet.
