US-Iran attacks resume, unsettling Hormuz shipping again
A missile exchange between Iranian and American forces ended a recent lull, with Jordan also intercepting projectiles over its territory.
Iran and the United States have resumed direct attacks on one another, ending a period of relative calm and injecting fresh uncertainty into shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. American forces said Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles in a surprise attack on US positions, with every projectile intercepted before reaching its target.
Jordan separately said its air defences destroyed five Iranian missiles over its territory, indicating the exchange extended beyond a narrow, contained strike and involved trajectories crossing into neighbouring airspace. The renewed hostilities mark a sharp reversal after a period in which tensions around the Strait of Hormuz had appeared to ease.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical chokepoints for oil and gas shipments, and any resumption of direct military exchanges between Iran and the United States tends to ripple quickly through tanker traffic, insurance pricing and freight rates in the region. Shipowners and operators active in the Gulf have grown accustomed to rapidly shifting risk assessments as tensions rise and fall.
Successful interception of the missiles by both American and Jordanian defences prevented casualties or damage in this instance, but the exchange itself signals that the underlying standoff between Washington and Tehran remains far from resolved. Previous rounds of escalation in the region have led to direct attacks on commercial vessels, making the shipping industry particularly sensitive to any sign of renewed military confrontation.
With attacks having resumed after a lull, attention now turns to whether this marks an isolated flare-up or the start of a more sustained escalation. Shipping companies transiting the Gulf are likely to reassess routing and security precautions closely in the days ahead as the situation develops.
