Thamesborg Completes Northwest Passage a Year After Grounding
The 172-metre general cargo ship transited in five days with a cargo of carbon anodes
Royal Wagenborg's Thamesborg has completed a transit of the Northwest Passage without incident, a year after the same vessel grounded on the route.
The 172-metre ship left Matane, Quebec, on August 8 and was scheduled to arrive at Onsan, South Korea, on September 3. Her transit of the passage itself took around five days, from August 13 to August 18. The vessel was carrying a cargo of carbon anodes.
The route took the general cargo ship through Franklin Strait, where she ran aground on September 6, 2025 while sailing from China to Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The vessel struck an uncharted shoal, damaging her hull and several ballast tanks and causing water ingress. Nobody was injured and no pollution was reported.
That earlier casualty illustrated the specific hazard of the route, which is not ice so much as survey coverage. Large stretches of the Canadian Arctic archipelago have never been surveyed to modern standards, and a vessel navigating on charts compiled from sparse historical soundings is exposed to features that simply are not on them.
The return transit carries commercial weight beyond one voyage. Wagenborg is among the operators that have kept a project and general cargo presence on Arctic routings, where the distance saving between the North Atlantic and northeast Asia is substantial but insurance, ice class requirements and the short open-water window all limit how much tonnage can use it.
Interest in the high-latitude routes has grown through 2026, with the first South Korean container ship trial voyage via the Northern Sea Route running earlier this month. The Northwest Passage remains the less-used of the two, handling occasional project and bulk movements rather than any scheduled service.
