Solstad Wins $62m Petrobras Contract for CSV Normand Valiant
Two-year accommodation and walk-to-work charter starting in the fourth quarter
Norwegian owner Solstad has won a new contract for one of its construction support vessels from Brazilian state-controlled Petrobras.
The oil and gas major has hired the 2008-built construction support vessel Normand Valiant for two years. The contract carries a gross value of approximately $62m and is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, in direct continuation of the current agreement and following class renewal.
The vessel will provide accommodation services supporting production activities on the Brazilian continental shelf. Normand Valiant is a smaller construction vessel mobilised with a walk-to-work gangway system and accommodation capacity for 120 people, a configuration that suits the maintenance and hook-up work Petrobras runs across its producing fields rather than heavy subsea construction.
The structure of the deal reflects Solstad's split corporate arrangement. The vessel will be on bareboat contract from Solstad Maritime to Solstad Offshore, which is the contract holder with Petrobras. Solstad Offshore holds 27.3% of the shares in Solstad Maritime.
Direct continuation matters commercially. A vessel rolling straight from one Petrobras charter into another avoids the idle time and repositioning cost that erode day-rate economics in the Brazilian market, where mobilisation from the North Sea is expensive and the alternative is a period in lay-up. Timing the class renewal to sit between the two contracts removes the only off-hire window in the sequence.
Brazil has become the anchor market for accommodation and walk-to-work offshore vessel tonnage, with Petrobras running a sustained programme of platform maintenance alongside its pre-salt development work. Contract terms of two years or more have become the norm on that work, giving owners visibility that the North Sea spot market has not offered for several years.
