Pindustry takes majority stake in maritime simulator builder VSTEP

The Rotterdam-based simulation specialist gets a new majority shareholder as its founding family steps back from ownership.

Rotterdam-based maritime simulation specialist VSTEP has a new majority shareholder after investment company Pindustry acquired the controlling stake previously held by the shipping family that backed the business. The deal marks a generational change in ownership for a company known for building training simulators used across the maritime sector.

Under the new structure, VSTEP's existing management remains involved as a co-shareholder and continues to be responsible for the company's day-to-day leadership, providing continuity through the ownership change. That arrangement is designed to preserve institutional knowledge and client relationships built up under the previous ownership while giving the business fresh capital and backing to pursue further growth.

VSTEP has built its reputation supplying simulation technology used to train ship crews, pilots and other maritime professionals, a niche but increasingly important segment of the industry as digital training tools supplement traditional hands-on instruction. Simulator-based training allows crews to rehearse complex or hazardous manoeuvres in a controlled environment before encountering them at sea.

The transaction reflects a broader pattern of consolidation and ownership change across maritime technology suppliers, as investment firms look to back specialist companies serving a global shipping industry under pressure to modernise training, safety and compliance practices. For an investment company such as Pindustry, a stake in an established simulator builder offers exposure to a sector with steady demand tied to crew training requirements rather than shipping market cycles.

With new ownership in place and management continuity assured, attention will turn to how VSTEP uses the backing to expand its simulator offering, whether through new product lines, international expansion or further investment in its existing technology. The deal adds to a steady stream of ownership changes among specialist maritime technology and service providers this year.
