Peter Dohle Adds Two More 14,000 teu Ships at Hudong-Zhonghua, Taking the Series to Six
The pair are due in August and October 2028, with provisions for a later methanol conversion

The independent German owner Peter Dohle Schiffahrts has expanded its container ship newbuilding programme with an order for two additional 14,000 teu vessels at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of CSSC in China.
The latest contract brings the company's total orders for 14,000 teu container ships at the yard to six vessels. The two newly ordered ships are scheduled for delivery in August and October 2028.
The series began in 2024, when Peter Dohle ordered four 14,000 teu methanol-ready ships from Hudong-Zhonghua at approximately $150m each. The first of those, ESL Singapore, was delivered in May 2026, around five months ahead of schedule.
The vessels measure approximately 336 metres in length and 51 metres in beam, with a capacity of about 14,170 teu. They are fitted with conventional-fuel propulsion, with provisions for a future methanol-fuel conversion, alongside exhaust gas cleaning systems and other energy-saving technologies.
That specification is the commercially interesting part. A methanol-ready hull carries the structural and space allowances for a later conversion without paying for the fuel system now, which lets an owner hold an option on the fuel decision while a charterer takes delivery of a conventional ship. It is a middle path between a dual-fuel newbuilding and a plain one, and it has become common on tonnage ordered for the tramp charter market rather than for a liner operator's own account.
Since restarting its container ship newbuilding programme in 2024, Peter Dohle has ordered more than 20 vessels of various types and sizes, all from shipyards under CSSC. Its current newbuilding portfolio spans 14,000 teu, 8,400 teu, 6,400 teu, 3,100 teu and 2,900 teu container ships.
Founded in Hamburg in 1956, Peter Dohle operates a diversified fleet of approximately 335 vessels, including around 300 container ships, which makes it one of the world's largest owners of tramp-operated container tonnage.
The order also underlines how much of the current wave is landing at a single builder. With the latest additions, Hudong-Zhonghua has publicly disclosed around 50 newbuilding orders this year, including options, primarily covering large container ships, LNG carriers and VLCCs.
