Noble posts $37 million loss in second quarter on rig suspensions

Operational halts affecting two rigs in Brazil and an exit from the Black Sea weighed on revenue and utilisation at the offshore driller.

Offshore driller Noble reported a net loss of $37 million for the second quarter of 2026, after operational suspensions affecting two rigs in Brazil weighed heavily on revenue and fleet utilisation during the period. The quarterly loss marks a sharp swing from the $121 million in net income the company posted just three months earlier.

Contract drilling services revenue fell to $679 million in the quarter, down from $743 million in the previous quarter, reflecting the impact of the Brazilian rig suspensions alongside the company's exit from operations in the Black Sea. Both factors reduced the pool of contracted rig days available to generate revenue during the period.

Rig suspensions of the kind affecting Noble's Brazilian operations typically stem from client-driven contract pauses, regulatory issues or operational reviews, and can leave high-value assets idle for extended periods while still incurring standby costs. The Black Sea exit adds a further complicating factor, removing a market that had contributed to the company's offshore drilling footprint.

The offshore drilling sector has experienced an uneven recovery in recent years, with day rates and utilisation improving in some regions even as individual operators contend with contract disruptions in specific markets. Noble's results illustrate how quickly localised setbacks can offset broader improvements in a driller's overall order book.

With the quarterly loss now reported, attention turns to how quickly Noble can resolve the Brazilian rig suspensions and redeploy the affected units into contracted work. The company's next quarterly update is likely to show whether the disruptions proved temporary or continue to weigh on performance into the second half of the year.
