Nissen Kaiun closes in on double-digit bulker sell-off

Nissen Kaiun is two ships short of reaching double-digit vessel sales in just six months, according to sales registers, as the Japanese powerhouse cashes in on young, locally built bulkers and tankers.

For the second time in a matter of weeks, the company has sold modern eco tonnage, the kind of ship buyers are chasing hardest. Brokers report the headline deal of the week is the 183,000 dwt Lady Deena, built by Japan Marine United in 2020, sold for around $70m. Chinese buyers are tipped as the takers, underlining the strength of cash-rich Chinese interest in modern Japanese-built capes.

The price also sets a fresh benchmark. As a reference point, the one-year-older, similarly sized Imabari-built Lowlands Spirit sold in April for $65.5m. The latest reported price for Lady Deena marks a rise of about $4.5m, or nearly 7%, in 10 weeks.

Earlier this month, Splash revealed that Shanghai-based Van Hui Shipping was behind the purchase of Nissen Kaiun's Imabari-built Ehime Queen. The 181,000 dwt capesize sold for $57.5m in the first week of June.

Nissen Kaiun still controls one of the youngest capesize fleets in the market, with 23 young capesizes averaging around four years of age.
