LNG-capable fleet could nearly double in five years, Shell says

More than 850 LNG-capable vessels are in service and the fleet could nearly double by 2030 if orderbook deliveries proceed, according to Shell.

More than 850 LNG-capable vessels are already in operation globally, and the fleet could nearly double over the next five years if current orderbook deliveries proceed as planned, according to Shell. LNG bunker demand is set to grow sharply, from around 3-4m tonnes in 2025 to roughly 26m tonnes by 2035.

Shell projects continued growth into the 2040s, reaching about 38m tonnes by 2040 and peaking at 44-45m tonnes by 2045. Earlier this month, Jiangnan Shipyard won an order to build four LNG dual-fuel carriers for Shell.
