L&T and Hitachi Energy secure framework deal for TenneT's 2GW wind programme

Indian engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro has secured a framework cooperation agreement covering a 2 gigawatt offshore wind transmission programme with Germany's transmission system operator TenneT. L&T entered the agreement in consortium with Hitachi Energy, positioning the pairing to compete for a substantial slate of North Sea grid connection work.

The framework covers six projects along with future opportunities under TenneT's wider 2 gigawatt high-voltage direct current programme, giving the consortium visibility into a pipeline of offshore transmission infrastructure extending beyond any single project award. HVDC technology is used to carry electricity generated far offshore back to onshore grids with minimal transmission losses over long distances.

TenneT operates transmission infrastructure across large parts of Germany and the Netherlands and has been steadily expanding its offshore grid connection programme as North Sea wind capacity grows. Framework agreements of this kind are designed to streamline the process of awarding and delivering multiple related projects under a single cooperative structure rather than tendering each one separately.

For L&T, the agreement extends the Indian conglomerate's push into international offshore energy infrastructure, building on its established engineering and construction capabilities in power transmission. Pairing with Hitachi Energy, an established supplier of HVDC and grid technology, gives the consortium combined strength in both large-scale project delivery and specialised electrical equipment.

The framework is designed to support large-scale offshore wind deployment in the North Sea as European countries continue to expand renewable generation capacity to meet climate targets. Further details on individual project timelines and investment values under the agreement have not been disclosed.
