India Plans First Northern Sea Route Cargo Voyage to Europe in 2027
Arkhangelsk points to a 70 percent volume rise on the Chennai-Vladivostok trade as the opening
As the shipping season on Russia's Northern Sea Route moves into its peak, India has emerged as the latest country looking to test transits to Europe, as part of a wider effort to expand economic ties with Moscow.
The development of the NSR has always carried political undertones, and they are growing louder. Chinese coverage of the launch of the country's first regular container service along the route emphasises both Western opposition and the economic benefit, presenting it as a corridor for high-value industries in the Yangtze River Delta and an opening for high-end electromechanical products and cross-border e-commerce.
The governor of Russia's Arkhangelsk region, Aleksandr Tsybulsky, has discussed the opportunities to expand trade with India, suggesting Russia could build ships for India, carry Indian cargo and expand exports there. Volumes on the Chennai-Vladivostok trade have already risen 70 percent, and extending onto the NSR is presented as creating further opportunity for both states. Tsybulsky said India is looking to send its first cargo ship along the route in 2027.
President Vladimir Putin raised the growing interest in the NSR during his meeting with Indian leaders earlier this year, acknowledging India among the countries showing interest.
The timing is tight against two other Asian entries. China launched its scheduled season service days earlier, and South Korea is due to send its first demonstration vessel a week later.
China's Sea Legend Line began its first trip of the season with the Dubai Tower, which departed Ningbo on the evening of Saturday 15 August and is scheduled to make the transit in 18 to 20 days, against roughly 40 days through the Suez Canal and 50 via the Cape of Good Hope. It is due at Felixstowe on 7 September before proceeding to Hamburg and Gdynia. Sea Legend has scheduled eight round trips for 2026, with the first two reported fully booked.
Chinese officials argue the cold suits cargo that is both valuable and sensitive to temperature, precision instruments and new-energy batteries among it. What the Dubai Tower is actually carrying runs to energy storage cabinets, power batteries, photovoltaic modules and components for new-energy vehicles, most of it out of Yangtze River Delta cities.
Last year 23 containerships made the transit, alongside 206 voyages carrying LNG from the Yamal project to Europe.
The route's constraints are real. Ice flows can disrupt transits and the season for containerships is limited to August through October. The Russian insurer AlfaStrakhovanie confirmed last week that it had paid out over 53 million roubles, about 650,000 dollars, on a claim for serious hull damage to a tanker operating in the Arctic. The insurer said the tanker suffered hull deformations while navigating through ice, and that even with icebreaker assistance, navigation in Arctic waters carries increased hull stress and risk of damage.
South Korea is framing its potential entry as politically neutral and says it will observe all Arctic operating regulations, hoping to attract shippers, particularly from Japan, who want to accelerate shipments to Europe without the political exposure.
