HMM Rotterdam makes maiden call at Felixstowe

One of the world's largest container ships has docked at the Port of Felixstowe for the first time, marking a new milestone for the UK gateway's ability to handle ultra-large tonnage. The HMM Rotterdam, measuring 400 metres in length with a capacity of 23,820 TEU, arrived early on Tuesday morning having sailed from Pasir Panjang in Singapore.

Built in 2020 and sailing under the Panama flag, the vessel ranks among the largest container ships currently in service anywhere in the world. Local shipping photographers who track vessel arrivals at the Suffolk port captured the ship as it berthed at sunrise, noting the scale of the call given the size of tonnage involved.

The call adds to a string of large-vessel visits to Felixstowe in recent weeks. In June, the dual-fuel container ship YM Worthiness, with a capacity of 15,500 TEU and a length of 365 metres, made its maiden European call at the port while operating on the FE3 Asia-Europe service. Together, the two arrivals point to a broader trend of carriers deploying larger tonnage on services that call at the UK's principal deep-sea container terminal.

Handling vessels of this scale requires sufficient berth length, crane outreach and channel depth, all factors that ports along the northern European range have been investing in as carriers continue to upsize their Asia-Europe fleets. Felixstowe's ability to accommodate a near-24,000 TEU vessel alongside its existing operations signals that the port's infrastructure is keeping pace with the growing average size of ships calling on the trade.

For carriers, deploying the largest available tonnage on core east-west strings remains a way to spread costs across more containers per voyage, even as those same ships create knock-on pressure on inland logistics and terminal productivity when they arrive. The Rotterdam's call is likely to be followed by further large-ship visits to Felixstowe as operators continue to route their newest and biggest vessels through the port.
