HD Hyundai launches first vessel from revived Subic yard

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Philippines has launched the first vessel built at its Subic shipyard, marking the start of full-scale shipbuilding operations at the revived facility. The launch of the vessel, named Orion Jade, represents a significant milestone for the yard as it moves from construction preparation into active production.

Orion Jade is the first of a four-ship order and measures 250 metres in length, 42 metres in width and 21 metres in depth, dimensions that place it among the larger classes of commercial vessels built at Asian yards. Construction on the ship began in September last year with a steel-cutting ceremony, the traditional milestone marking the formal start of a vessel's build process.

The Subic facility's revival reflects a broader effort to bring back shipbuilding capacity at a site with a long industrial history, as HD Hyundai looks to expand its production footprint beyond its home yards in South Korea. Establishing full-scale operations at a previously dormant or underused facility typically requires substantial investment in infrastructure, workforce training and supply chain development before reaching this stage.

Launching the first vessel from a revived yard is widely seen in the shipbuilding industry as proof that a facility's production systems, workforce and supply chains are functioning as intended, ahead of a fuller ramp-up in output. The remaining three vessels in the order will provide further tests of the yard's capacity to deliver consistently at scale.

With the first ship now launched, attention turns to the completion and delivery of the remaining vessels in the four-ship order, as well as any future contracts that might follow if the yard demonstrates reliable performance. The milestone adds Subic to the list of Southeast Asian shipbuilding sites now producing large commercial vessels for international owners.
