GasLog LNG carrier lands industry-first ABS smart maintenance notation

Class society ABS pairs its SMART machinery-health notation with a preventative maintenance programme for the first time

Monitoring screens glowing in a ship control room

Class society ABS has awarded its SMART (MHM) notation to a GasLog liquefied natural gas carrier, making it the first vessel in the world to receive the notation in combination with the ABS Preventative Maintenance Program. The notation confirms that a ship has a permanently installed machinery health monitoring system that tracks the condition of onboard equipment, flags anomalies and helps predict degradation or faults before they cause failures.

The project was developed with Propulsion Analytics, whose technology underpins the vessel's machinery health monitoring. ABS chief technology officer Patrick Ryan called it a pioneering step in applying smart technology and advanced analytics to gas carrier operations, adding that it showed machinery health monitoring at this level can deliver predictive maintenance and reliability gains.

GasLog asset integrity manager Lampros Nikolopoulos said the milestone marked the near completion of a fleetwide transition to the SMART (MHM) notation under the owner's lifecycle maintenance strategy, built on condition-based maintenance schemes that combine thermodynamic digital twins, high-frequency telemetry and lubrication, chemical, vibration and planned maintenance data. Propulsion Analytics chief executive Panos Kyrtatos described it as the culmination of a four-year effort to bring engine condition-based maintenance from concept to class-approved reality on LNG carriers.

The notation forms part of ABS's wider smart functions framework, a set of optional class notations recognising vessels fitted with permanently installed systems for machinery health monitoring, condition-based maintenance and other digitally enabled capabilities.
