Fincantieri Books Two More Viking Ocean Ships for 2032 Delivery

Fincantieri and Viking have signed contracts for two new cruise ships, converting options that were taken out in April 2025. Both vessels will be built at Fincantieri's Ancona facility, with delivery scheduled for 2032.

The ships will measure approximately 54,300 gross tons and accommodate 998 passengers in 499 cabins. They will be built to comply with the latest environmental and navigation regulations and will carry modern safety systems.

The order follows contracts placed earlier in 2026 for two expedition vessels, and takes the total programme between the two companies to 28 ships. Fincantieri classifies the agreement as large, a category the shipbuilder defines as representing between 500 million and one billion euros.

Pierroberto Folgiero, chief executive of Fincantieri, said the agreement marks another milestone in a long-standing partnership with Viking and serves as a testament to the yard's record in the segment.

The contract lands in a part of the newbuilding market that has been running against the wider cruise trend toward ever-larger tonnage. Ships in the 50,000 to 70,000 gross ton bracket, configured for under a thousand passengers, now account for a disproportionate share of orders by number: roughly a fifth of ships currently on order across the industry are destined for the ultra-luxury and small-ship segments, with at least 16 such vessels due over the next decade representing close to a million gross tons but only around 10,000 berths.

Ancona is one of several Italian yards Fincantieri uses for passenger work, and the 2032 delivery slot underlines how far forward European cruise berth capacity is now committed. The order also extends Viking's position as one of the yard's largest single customers, with the fleet count across ocean and expedition tonnage continuing to build well into the next decade.
