COSCO advances $1.1 billion Tianjin shipbuilding base

COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry is pressing ahead with plans for a shipbuilding base in Tianjin worth roughly $1.1 billion, adding another significant block of capacity to China's rapidly expanding shipbuilding industry. The facility will feature two drydocks large enough to build vessels at VLCC scale, positioning it to compete for some of the largest and most valuable newbuilding contracts in the market.

Newly filed environmental documents show the greenfield yard will occupy nearly 146 hectares within Tianjin's Lingang Economic Area, underlining the scale of the investment and the site's ambitions to become a major shipbuilding hub. Greenfield developments of this size typically take years to move from initial filings through construction to full operational capacity.

The project adds to a broader wave of shipyard expansion across China, as the country's shipbuilders continue to add capacity in response to strong global demand for newbuildings across tanker, container and bulk carrier segments. VLCC-scale drydocks in particular are in high demand given the current surge in crude tanker ordering worldwide.

For COSCO, a new dedicated base in Tianjin would strengthen its position among China's leading shipbuilding groups, complementing existing yard capacity elsewhere in the country. The choice of the Lingang Economic Area reflects a broader pattern of Chinese industrial planning that clusters heavy manufacturing capacity in designated economic zones with supporting infrastructure.

With environmental filings now public, the project moves a step closer to construction, though a precise timeline for completion has not been detailed. The Tianjin base adds to a lengthening list of major shipyard investments underway across China as the country works to extend its lead in global shipbuilding output.
