BW Ideol Wins Scottish Funding to Engineer Its Ardersier Floater Factory
More than £778,000 takes an 18-month FEED programme for concrete Damping Pool foundations
BW Ideol has secured more than £778,000 in Scottish Government funding to move its planned floating wind foundation factory at the Port of Ardersier into front-end engineering design.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise approved the award following work with Scottish Development International. The money supports an 18-month FEED programme for a production facility dedicated to the company's concrete Damping Pool floating foundations.
The plant is designed around serial production rather than project-by-project fabrication. A single line would turn out one foundation every 12 days, equivalent to about 500 MW of floating wind capacity a year, and HIE estimates the facility could support around 1,200 direct jobs if it moves into operation. That production rate is the point of the concept: floating wind at commercial scale requires foundations to be delivered on a manufacturing cadence rather than as individual heavy-engineering builds, and concrete has been advanced as a route to that because it can be cast near the deployment site without competing for steel fabrication capacity. The offshore vessels that tow and hook up the units are booked against the same production cadence.
Ardersier is closely tied to the 1 GW Buchan floating wind project, in which BW Ideol holds a 33% stake alongside BayWa and Elicio. The Damping Pool design has been selected as the preferred foundation concept for the scheme, located around 75 km off Fraserburgh.
The company has held exclusive access to Ardersier for concrete foundation production since a partnership agreement with the port in 2021. This award is the first public-sector backing secured specifically for the proposed Scottish factory, which shifts the project from a commercial option held over a site to one with a funded engineering programme attached.
Buchan received consent for its onshore electrical infrastructure in May, with a decision on the offshore consent application expected before the end of the year. Kent was appointed owner's engineer in July as the scheme advances towards FEED and a final investment decision.
The sequencing matters for the factory: a foundation plant sized for one project needs that project to reach financial close before the line can be committed.
