Icebreaker Botnica Fixed for a 45-Day South African Buoy Mooring Job
The charter fills the Estonian vessel's 2027 summer season, outside its winter icebreaking duty.
Estonia's TS Shipping has found summer employment for its multipurpose icebreaker Botnica on the other side of the equator, fixing the vessel to OSC Marine Group for offshore work in South African waters.
The offshore vessel will be employed on a single buoy mooring change-out project, providing support for subsea operations including pipeline handling, subsea lifting, remotely operated vehicle work and diving. The charter runs for 45 calendar days with operations scheduled to begin in May 2027, and the charterer holds an option to extend by up to a further nine days.
The timing is the point of the deal. TS Shipping, a subsidiary of port operator Tallinna Sadam, is contracted with the Estonian Transport Administration to provide icebreaking services in Estonian coastal waters from 20 December to 20 April each year. That leaves eight months in which a purpose-built icebreaker has to earn its keep somewhere else, and the South African campaign secures a block of the 2027 summer season well in advance.
Botnica, which carries IMO number 9165877, is built for exactly this dual role. Ice-class hull and propulsion for the Baltic winter, a working deck, crane and ROV capability for offshore construction support in open water, and a track record of international project charters between icebreaking seasons.
Single buoy mooring replacements are a recurring source of that work. The moorings that allow tankers to load and discharge offshore have finite service lives, and swapping one out requires a vessel that can handle pipeline sections, lift subsea structures, support divers and hold position over the worksite, which is a narrower capability set than a standard platform supply vessel offers.
Tallinna Sadam runs the shipping side of its business through two subsidiaries: TS Laevad, which operates ferries between the Estonian mainland and the largest islands, and TS Shipping, which charters Botnica for icebreaking and offshore services at home and abroad. The group is also a shareholder in Green Marine, which provides waste management services.
The contract value has not been disclosed, and no further vessels are involved.
