Asiatic Lloyd signs up for three LR2 tankers

The Bunnemann-controlled owner returns to the larger product tanker segment with three 115,000 dwt newbuildings.

Officer shortage risks exceeding 100,000 by 2030

Singapore-based Asiatic Lloyd has returned to the larger product tanker segment with a deal for three LR2 newbuildings at HD Hyundai's Philippines yard. Shipbuilding sources have linked the Bunnemann family-controlled owner to three 115,000 dwt tankers priced at about $73m each, with deliveries expected in 2028 and 2029. Neither the owner nor the yard has issued an official announcement.

The order marks Asiatic Lloyd's return to larger product tanker newbuildings after it exited its older LR2 exposure in 2023. AL Group's current fleet shows eight MR2 product tankers, all delivered between 2023 and 2025 — six 50,000 dwt vessels built at Hyundai Vietnam and two at Hyundai Mipo in South Korea.

The group has been steadily diversifying beyond its containership base, with investments across dry bulk, product tankers and car carriers. It has also been active in newbuilding markets outside tankers: Splash reported last year that Asiatic Lloyd had returned to Dalian Shipbuilding in China for a pair of 7,100 teu containerships, adding to earlier orders at the same yard.
