Foreship unveils energy-efficient ferry concept for Greece
Design targets ageing domestic tonnage with a moderate-speed profile

Finnish naval architecture firm Foreship, now part of RINA, has developed an energy-efficient ferry concept for Greece's domestic market, targeting operators grappling with ageing tonnage, seasonality, regulated pricing and rising costs.
Greece's ferry network links more than 200 inhabited islands and carries around 50m passengers a year. The concept adopts a more moderate operating-speed profile than the traditional high-speed approach to improve fuel efficiency and economics, and factors in updated European stability requirements that affect ferry dimensions and capacity. Consultant Ari Huttunen said the aim was to optimise both capital and operating costs while avoiding unnecessary complexity.
Foreship, founded in 2002 with more than 90 staff across eight offices and 1,500-plus conversion projects behind it, was fully acquired by RINA in 2025.
