Nautical Mile
A unit of distance at sea, equal to one minute of latitude, about 1,852 metres.
Definition
A nautical mile is the standard distance unit at sea, defined as one minute of arc of latitude and fixed by international agreement at exactly 1,852 metres. It is convenient because a degree of latitude is sixty nautical miles, so distances read straight off a chart. Combined with the knot (one nautical mile per hour) it makes speed and time calculations simple for navigators.
